Where every pet gets the royal treatment

The Humane Society of Northwest Iowa is a 501(c)3 non-profit animal shelter that has been serving Dickinson, Clay, Emmet, Palo Alto, O'Brien, and Osceola counties since 1987. Our mission is to promote the ethical and humane treatment of all animals, provide care, housing, and rehabilitation for animals in need, and educate on the importance of spaying or neutering animals. We strive to make a difference in the lives of animals and the communities we serve.

Our History

In 1987, a group of concerned friends and neighbors came together to help homeless pets. They worked tirelessly to care for and find homes for many stray dogs and cats. After nearly 10 years of temporary care, the group raised the funds and secured a matching grant to build a permanent shelter. The Chelsea Dog Shelter was completed in 1996, providing a home for many animals. Since then, we have continued to grow and expand our services, including the addition of the Weaver Cattery in 1999, which houses over 110 cats and kittens.

Our Services

We offer a variety of services, including dog and cat adoption, foster care, stray and owner surrender, and a Barn Cat Program. We also provide TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) services for feral cats and community outreach programs to give back to our community. Our goal is to ensure that every animal in our care receives the best possible treatment and finds a forever home.

Ways to Help

There are many ways to support our mission. You can donate monetary funds, sponsor an adoption fee, or provide essential supplies such as scoopable cat litter, non-latex surgical gloves, and dog and cat treats. You can also help by spreading awareness about animal welfare and the importance of spaying or neutering. Every contribution, big or small, makes a difference in the lives of animals.
